More Than Ice Cream: Cockeye Cares Celebrates with Gateways to Better Living

Earlier this spring, several outlets featured our Cockeye Cares partnership with Gateways to Better Living and the release of our Banana Cream Pie ice cream flavor benefiting the organization.

Most days around here don’t feel very glamorous. They feel like fixing freezers, answering emails at midnight, running between scoop shops, loading deliveries, trying to keep up with production schedules, and hoping we made enough waffle cones or have enough milk for milkshakes for a Saturday rush (seriously.)

But every few months, we get reminded that what we’re building can actually matter to people in ways bigger than ice cream. This Spring, we partnered with Gateways to Better Living through our ‘Cockeye Cares Pint Program’ for a flavor called Banana Cream Pie — a rich banana ice cream loaded with house-made pie crusts and marshmallow créme swirl.

A playful, nostalgic flavor that felt comforting and familiar. Something happy. Something that could bring people together while also doing a little good at the same time.

Ice cream is approachable. It’s joyful. It creates moments. And when you tie those moments to a mission bigger than yourself, people respond in an incredibly human way.

Small businesses should still be deeply connected to the communities around them. This community built Cockeye Creamery. Warren built us. The Mahoning Valley built us. The people standing in line every weekend, buying pints for their families, supporting our weird flavor ideas, and cheering us on through our growth — they’re the reason we’re here at all.

Programs like Cockeye Cares are our attempt to return some of that love back into the places (and people) that made us possible.

And we’re just getting started.
